Want to save on your contract bill? A SIM-only contract may be your answer!

SIM-only deals

A SIM-only deal offers a package of minutes, texts and mobile data for a monthly cost, much the same as a traditional mobile phone contract. The difference, however, is that you BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device) and don’t get a new handset; you get the SIM… only!

So, why should you opt for a SIM-only contract?

Well firstly, SIM-only deals tend to be cheaper, as with traditional contracts you’re paying a premium each month within your agreement to pay off the actual cost of your phone PLUS interest. So, with a SIM-only deal (i.e. without getting a new phone) you’ll save money each month. On top of the savings, going SIM-only means that you can focus on getting the best deal to suit your usage needs – rather than just dealing with the tariffs available to ensure you get the handset you want.

The Advantages of SIM-Only

SIM-only deals are fast becoming one of the most popular options when getting a new phone contract. Compared to traditional mobile phone contracts, SIM-only deals have many advantages.

SIM-only deals tend to be cheaper. New handsets are expensive, and as you’re not forking out for a handset with your contract, networks don’t need to charge you as much for their services, which brings your monthly payments down.

Another advantage of going SIM-only is that it’s easier to pass the credit check. If you’ve ever been turned down for a phone contract in the past, opting for a SIM-only deal might be the best solution for getting the phone and tariff that you want. Again, because mobile phone networks aren’t ‘renting’ you a mobile phone handset, it not only brings down the price of your contract, but it also makes you a low-risk candidate.

If you have a Dual-SIM phone, splitting your Voice and Data SIM’s is probably one of the most effective ways of saving money. By getting a SIM-Only Data SIM, you can take advantage of the benefits of massively reduced data prices while still keeping your voice line costs down.

How does SIM-only work?

SIM-only deals are simple: select the right package of minutes, texts and data that suits your needs, insert the SIM card into your phone, and you’re good to go.

Users also have one of two options when going for a SIM-only deal. Content with your existing handset? Because you’re only paying for a SIM card, you can pop your new SIM into your current mobile and immediately start saving the pennies! Alternatively, you can purchase the phone of your choice SIM-free, which is great for users who find it tricky getting past the credit check.

And did you know that you can still keep your phone number with a SIM-only contract, even if you switch networks? Just ask your assistant to port your existing cellphone number from your current mobile provider.

Huawei Nova 5T, launching at Cellucity soon…

With Huawei being caught up in the Trump trade war, we managed to miss out on getting access to the rather incredible Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

The US Trade blacklist of Huawei has prevented it from licensing Android technology from Google and gaining access to Google Services, that are used, to power Google’s apps. So as incredible as the Huawei Mate 30 hardware is, vendors around the globe haven’t been too keen to roll the dice on a device that lacked access to essential applications like Google Maps, You Tube etc…

With us heading towards Christmas season and Samsung and Apple launching their latest iconic devices, Huawei needed to bring something to the party!

Huawei Nova – Crush Blue

Enter the Huawei Nova 5T, planned and approved before the US blacklist this photography powerhouse is still Google approved and runs Android Pie (9). Whilst the Nova range has traditionally not available in the South African market, Huawei has opted to release it here and it will be available early in November 2019.

The NOVA lineup, in the Huawei stable, sits in between the youth-focused Y-series and the more premium orientated P-series. It offers an aspirational trendsetter, a phone that is as unique as it is powerful!

First off, the stunning colours Mid-Summer Purple and Crush Blue, give a fresh new funky look, my preference being the Purple, which subtly has the Nova logo etched into the facia creating a dynamic wow appeal. It really has to be seen “in the flesh” to be appreciated.

Huawei Nova – Mid-Summer Purple

From a tech perspective, the Nova is not all just about style and very much about brilliant photography. A rear array of quad cameras leading with 48MP main camera, Macro lens, 16MP Ultra Wide Angle lens with supporting Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help optimize scene selection, your photos will be the envy of your Instagram followers!

And if taking greater photos was not enough, the front-facing camera is a staggering 32MP and also sports AI to ensure your Selfies always have you looking your best.

Other stand out features are a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, 8GB of RAM (great for gaming apps like PUBG) and 128GB onboard memory, the Nova 5T certainly ticks all the boxes!

The Huawei Nova 5T will be priced from R599 per month on a Vodacom contract and will retail for R11999. It is certainly going to be a strong contender against the more expensive “iconic” devices when comparing its specs.

The first 2000 lucky owners in SA will also receive a Huawei MediaPad T5 tablet valued at R3999. All in all, the Huawei Nova 5T is a great choice for this summer! For more information visit www.cellucity.co.za

Vodacom starts offering free Facebook access

Johannesburg – Mobile network Vodacom won’t bill data-usage for a free basic version of Facebook, joining the likes of Cell C in offering zero-rated social networks.

Once signed up to the service, Vodacom customers can update their Facebook status and comment on posts even when they do not have data.

Should users wish to view pictures or videos, they can switch from the free version to data mode to access the full Facebook service.

To use Facebook Flex customers can log on to Facebook.com or dial *111*32#.

Nyimpini Mabunda, chief officer of Vodacom’s consumer business unit, said that Vodacom’s Siyakha initiative is an important part of the mobile network’s effort to ensure digital inclusion for all its customers.

“Network operators like ourselves have a role to play in reducing the digital divide, particularly between those in urban and rural areas,” he said.

“In all our efforts we are mindful of the immense pressures that consumers face which are largely associated with the cost to communicate” he added.

“The popularity and the extensive use of social media services such as Facebook as a means of communication has made it a necessity rather than a luxury,” Mabunda said.

Vodacom told Fin24 that it plans to expand the offering of Siyakha in the near future.

In 2015, Cell C announced that its users would be able to access Facebook for free through Free Basics.

Since then the company expanded their offering allowing for Facebook Messenger usage and access to websites such as Health24, Wikipedia, Careers24, Gumtree, News24 and SuperSport.

SIM only deals – GET DOUBLE THE VALUE, if you don’t take a phone

With smartphone technological breakthrough race having slowed down and fewer and fewer life changing innovations being introduced, more and more of us are happy to keep or old smartphone for that little bit longer and perhaps wait for the next big thing! So if you due for an upgrade or you contract has reached its term, (and you’re not itching for a new phone) you should seriously consider “SIM ONLY” deals from Vodacom. On the SIM ONLY Plans you get double the value of the plan, so for example if you are on a Smart M @ R319 per month you normally get 120 minutes, 300 MB data and 300 sms which is then DOUBLED so your monthly allocation is then 240 minutes, 600MB and 600 sms! Boing! Result!

If you due for an upgrade you can sign up for this value immediately, but bare in mind that should you decide to get a phone later in the contract period you would need to pay up. Our advice is to get to the term date of your contract and simply “migrate to a sim only plan” on a month to month basis, thereby giving you the value without locking you in and then when your ideal new smartphone arrives you are free to upgrade and extend your contract.

New Vodacom Smart Platinum 7

Vodacom will be introducing its first “high end” branded smartphone this month in South Africa. The Smart Platinum 7 will also be bundled with a VR solution at launch, and pricing is expected to be around R7999. So how do the specs stack up?

The device has a high-end feel, and the build quality feels really good… glass front and back with a metal frame, it does contend well with the competition in the premium space.
Whilst the processor is not the fastest on the market, it is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 and users should be more than happy with the phones responsiveness coupled with the 3GB of RAM.
The main camera is a 16MP with 4K recording capability and a dual tone flash, the secondary “selfie camera” is also a more than amiable 8MP, once again sporting a flash.

It has a 5.5″ display with a decent 3000mAh battery which supports Quick Charge 3.0 and finalyl the onboard memory is 32GB and is expandable!

So overall it punches well within its weight in the premium sector and offer some real value for money.

On contract it will be going for R399 on the Vodacom Smart S, and includes a FREE Smart VR Headset.
