Dual SIM Phones have become very popular in recent times. While most networks prefer not to sell the benefits, clever use of a Dual SIM phone can not only be convenient but it can save you money. Nowdays most manufacturers have a range of phones that support Dual-SIM functionality.

Why would you even consider buying a dual sim mobile device? Having a dual sim phone means that you can keep two separate numbers for messages and calls.

Depending on the device you can even set it to prompt which SIM is used for calls, data services and text messages. Phones that support the Dual SIM service allow you to switch between your SIM cards seamlessly.

Dual SIM phones are very beneficial if you perhaps run a business and would like to have one number for business and one for personal use.

You can also save on your cellphone bills by taking advantage of different peak/off-peak specials and even splitting your voice and data usage.

If you want to keep control over which contact number is used for a certain purpose, then having a dual SIM phone is better than a single SIM.

Some of the benefits of dual SIM phones include:

Using separate numbers for calls and text messages or calls and data

Using separate numbers for business and personal

Capitalising on packages offered by various providers

Better connectivity if you travel (especially if you are using SIMS from different providers)

International Travel SIMs saving on roaming while abroad but still being able to access your local number

As with anything, when it comes to purchasing the best dual SIM mobile device, there are some things you need to take into consideration.

Here are our tips on what you should know before buying a dual SIM mobile device:

Is your device dual active or dual standby?

What this means is, that your device will either be able to have both SIMS active at the same time and you can switch between the two, or it will “listen” with both, but only one can be used at a time. Most newer dual SIM phones allow dual active mode, with older or cheaper devices more limited Dual SIM functionality.

Do both SIM slots have the same connectivity?

Check that the dual SIM slots have the same network capability (e.g 3G/4G or 5G) so that you can avoid issues with network connectivity. Certain devices limit the speeds or service on the secondary SIM slot. Some devices may have network locking on the secondary SIM slot if the primary SIM slot does not have the default network SIM active on the primary SIM slot.
